The Rathaus is first mentioned in documents in 1476. It was built in 1529. A large city fire in 1665 completely destroyed the Rathaus and surrounding marketplace. Another reconstruction took place in 1928 and further restoration in 2004.
The Marienkirche whose spire is seen below was also destroyed in the 1665 fire. It was also rebuilt and in 1879 installed its organ.
This piece of the old city gatehouse stills stands by the street showing the old entrance to Ronneburg.
Today Ronneburg is undergoing massive environmental work to cover pits where uranium was mined during the Soviet era. (2007 trip)
A museum (rt) and restored knight's hall (far rt) were both closed on our visit. We went back to Ronneburg with Robert to get these shots.
