Death Takes a Veteran
Old and Respected Resident Is Called Away
James A. McElhose Dead
Funeral Friday Afternoon From His Late Home

October 3, 1838, a baby boy was born in Patterson [sic], N.J. The father, James Andrew McElhose, and the mother, Rachel, gave the boy his father’s name. Here the family lived until he was seven years old. Then, in company with several other pioneers, they journeyed westward and settled in the Illinois forest - Elk Grove. When James Andrew had grown to young manhood he came to West Wheeling (now called Arlington Heights) and learned the trade of harness maker, working in the shop of his brother-in-law, August Klever.

Then the war with the South began. Patriotic fervor was warmed to white heat by meetings in churches and halls. When the call for men was given at one of these meetings in the Methodist Episcopal church, James McElhose was the first to stand and volunteer his service. He enlisted in June 1861, as a private in Compnay C., 19th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The regiment was placed under the command of Gen. John B. Turchin and immediately entered into active service against the Confederates. Private McElhose was at Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Stone River, Murphysboro, Missionary Ridge and many other great battles of the war. It was the 19th Remgiment which captured the trenches on top of Missionary Ridge. During the entire war he never missed a battle that his company was in. At one time, when in bed in the hospital, suffering from an attack of ague, he heard that his regiment was leaving. He immediately left his bed. Donning his uniform and shouldering his musket, he joined his comreades on the march. While lying on the ground in front of Confederate trenches at Stone River, a well aimed bullet grazed his back and went through his knapsack, making 18 holes in his folded rubber blanket. At Missionary Ridge he received a slight wound in his left forearm. Throughout the war, Private McElhose was always in the fighting line with his company. In July, 1864, he received a well-earned honorable discharge and was mustered out at Washington, D.C. After the war he returned to Arlington Heights (then known as Dunton) and began work as a harness maker.

Nov. 11, 1865, he married Miss Alma Thusius at her sister’s home on Evergreen street. To them were born fourteen children, seven of whom are living, Henry at Ilion, N.Y., Hattie at home, Charles of Marietta, Ohio, Edward and Laura at home, Arthur on Vail street and James at home. Two brothers survive him, Edward of Detroit, Mich., and Robert of Renton, Wash. Also five grandchildren.

Comrade McElhose was a member of the General Willich G.A.R. Post No. 780 at Des Plaines and the Ninteenth Regiment Ill. Veteran Club in Chicago. He was an enthusiastic supporter of these “old soldier” organizations and never missed a meeting, if he could avoid it. He was also a member of Palatine Lodge, No. 708, I.O.O.F. We will always remember the blue uniform, the felt hat, the heavy cane and round jovial face which has become so endeared to us all.

Last Tuesday afternoon Mr. McElhose decided to visit Comrade Reed living a mile east of the village. His friends watched his bent figure as he walked slowly down the road. As he turned into the lane he passed from their sight, and the men in the field saw him coming toward the house. When within a few rods of the house, he dropped his cane, staggered and fell to the ground. They rushed to him but life was already gone.

Thus, a respected citizen, a loving husband, a good father, an honored veteran has passed from us. Industrious, kind, patient, cheerful, always ready to tell a war story, Comrade McElhose has held a place among us which can never be filled.

The funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon at the house. The burial ceremony will be conducted by the Odd Fellows and G.A.R. Post. Rev. O.A. Parmenter will have charge of the services. Interment will be made in Arlington cemetery.

Alma Thusius McElhose
Herald (Arlington Heights, Illinois) November 6, 1928

Mrs. Alma McElhose, 82 years old, a pioneer of Arlington Heights, died Friday morning and was laid to rest Monday afternoon. The funeral held in the Methodist church, which she loved so well, was largely attended. Rev. Billman officated. Music was by a a vested quartette. The W.R.C. of which the deceased was a member, held a simple ceremony at the grave in Arlington cemetery.

Mrs. McElhose with the exception of a few years spent in Wisconsin, was a resident of Arlington Heights sixty-four years. She was among the older residents of the village and her husband was a civil war veteran.

The deceased was born in Saxon, Germany, Sept. 6, 1846, and when 18 years old came alone across the ocean to join her elder sister, Mrs. Julia Weinrich, in Arlington Heights. The latter, who is 84 years old, survives her.

When Mr. James McElhose returned home from the Civil war, he met and the same year, was married to the lass from Germany. Their married life was a happy one and five sons and a daughter were born to them. Mr. McElhose died July 20, 1915.

Mrs. McElhose has been an invalid many years. Her condition became more pitiful a few years ago when she lost her sight, but thru it all she showed a courageous spirit. She was a faithful attendant at the Methodist church as often as it was possible for her to get out. She maintained her interest in the church all these years and there was not a pastor of the local church who was not inspired by her Christianity and faithfulness.

About eight weeks ago, Mrs. McElhose fell down the cellar stairs and although severely bruised and cut, she apparently recovered. Since that time she has been confined to her bed a great deal. Death came quietly Friday.

There remain to mourn their loss, five sons, Henry of North Tonawanda, N.Y. and Chas., Edward, Arthur and James of Arlington Heights and one daughter, Laura, who resided at home; also ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Miss Henrietta McElhose

Once more the Angel of Death has visited our town. Relatives, friends and neighbors were all shocked and grieved to learn of the sudden death on April 2nd, of Miss Henrietta McElhose. Few knew she was even ill and none that her illness was serious. Even to attempt to enunciate the many splendid qualities of our friend is quite impossible. Her home has been her life work. She has always found time however to attend to many outside calls. The Methodist church of which she has been a member 29 years has always received her most hearty support in all departments. She was treasurer of the Sunday School 15 years. She has also been a loyal member of several other organizations. To her many friends she was a constant source of pleasure and a splendid example of faithfulness in the everyday duties of life. Miss Henrietta McElhose was born in Arlington Heights March 22, 1868 and died Monday evening, April 2, 1917, aged 49 years 11 days. She was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James McElhose and has lived her life in Arlington Heights with the exception of 11 years spend in Humbird, Wisconsin. She leaves to mourn her loss, her mother, one sister, Laura McElhose, and five brothers, Henry of Ilion, N.W.,[sic] Charles of Marietta, Ohio, Edward, Arthur and James of Arlington Heights.
