John Hindle (Original Immigrant)
At last it seems that we have located the marriage of John Hindle and Elizabeth Lawton. A marriage for John Hindle and Elizabeth Lawton is recorded at St. Mary's Church in Oldham, Lancashire, 14 February 1820. The couple is listed as from Cow Hill, a small village outside of Oldham. John is listed as a tinworker. It then appears they moved a short distance away, across the Tame River to Dukinfield near Staleybridge in Cheshire. Both Oldham and Staleybridge are in the modern day Greater Manchester county government area in the region known as Tameside.
John and "Betty" Hindle have 4 children recorded at Old St. George Church in Staleybridge: Ann, Mary, Elizabeth Lawton and Jane. Daughter Elizabeth Lawton Hindle is the key to believing that these are our ancestors. The dates of christening of the daughters coincide with dates calculated from information given at the death of the daughters. The 1825 Staleybridge Directory lists John Hindle as a tinworker which matches the marriage document.
The Hindle family, at least Elizabeth and her children, may have come over to New Jersey from England between 1830 and 1832. This is surmised from the birthplace and date of Jane (England 1829) and the 1832 Paterson Census. There is a John Hindle and his family in Samuel Fisher's Census 1832 as living in a house on John St. with 1 male, 4 females, 3 under 16. This correlates with John and Elizabeth's known family at the time.
It is possible that John came over prior to 1831 to establish himself before the rest of his family came. Thus far no immigration or passenger list has been discovered which would indicate when or where the Hindles entered the country.
John's approximate birth and death dates (1793-1845) were obtained from the transfer of burial records of Cedar Lawn Cemetery. John was originally buried at Sandy Hill and was transferred when Sandy Hill was dismantled. There is no verification for either birth or death dates from censuses or other sources.
At this update we are still trying to locate the correct John Hindle's birth. Ages were not given on the marriage document, nor parents' names.
Elizabeth Lawton Hindle (Wife of John Hindle)
Elizabeth’s last name is supposed from Daisy Spear’s memory of the family. Grandmother Daisy has been correct on all the other names I have researched that she knew, and it seems that now she is also correct on this one. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren were given Lawton as a first or middle name and so was daughter Elizabeth Lawton Hindle, the spinster. In the Staelybridge records, Elizabeth is listed as "Betty." At this update we are still trying to locate a definitive birth date or christening.
Being widowed rather early, she became the head of the family of seven children. In 1850 she is living with 6 of her children in the residence of Gilbert Elliot. Census Abstracts Mary, the oldest surviving daughter, had been married by this time. Elizabeth, the mother, has not been located in the 1860 census. By 1870 she is the head of a household that includes her eldest daughter, Mary and her family, and 2 of her widowed daughters, Salina (husband not located) and Jane (widowed) , with their respective children. Her last place of residence was Washington & Division St. She was supposedly 82 at the time of her death which would make her birth year about 1800.
Ann Hindle (Possible First Daughter of John and Elizabeth)
Ann is listed in the Old St. George Church register in Staleybridge, Cheshire as being christened 16 March 1823 and her birth also recorded as 27 January 1822. This daughter is not the one who would later marry James Norris. I feel that we will find a death for this child, either in Cheshire or perhaps even on the voyage over to America. There are two other deaths in Staleybridge listed to John Hindle that perhaps could be other children of John and Elizabeth, but definitive evidence is not yet in hand. There is time between the marriage in Oldham and this birth for there to have been another child who died. There are two deaths in Staleybridge attributed to children of a John Hindle. One is Nancy Hindle, buried 6 May 1821, age 8 months, daughter of John and Elizabeth Hindle. The other is Harriet Hindle, buried 9 March 1824, age 8 days, daughter of John Hindle.
Mary Hindle Calvin (Eldest Surviving Daughter of John and Elizabeth)
Mary is listed in the Old St. George Church register in Staleybridge, Cheshire as being christened 27 Mar 1825, daughter of John and Betty Hindle. This would be consistent with her calculated birth date from her age at death, 49 yrs, 2 mos, 25 days, which would be 24 Feb 1825.
Her marriage was noted in the Paterson Intelligencer newspaper. She was married in Brooklyn. The Josiah Calvin family was living in the same residence as Elizabeth Hindle (the mother) in 1870. Josiah Calvin was also mentioned in an obituary of John Henry Hindle. Obituary
In 1850 she is listed as age 26 (b. ~1824). In 1860, she is listed as age 35 (b. ~1825). In 1870 she is listed as age 45 (b.~1825). She and her husband both die before 1880, so no further evidence is possible. Family
Elizabeth Lawton Hindle (Second Surviving Daughter of John and Elizabeth)
Elizabeth’s birthdate is a mystery at this time. Varying census records have her birth year as 1828 (1850) and 1831 (1860). She has not been located in the 1870 census. Her gravestone at the cemetery says 1826 and her death certificate also indicate this as her birth year (age 57). She died unmarried. She died of "general debility" not long after her mother. Jane Hindle Ackerman (Third Surviving Daughter of John and Elizabeth)
Jane's birth as calculated using her age listed in her obituary would be 19 Aug 1829. The St. George's Church Register lists her christening as 13 September 1829. Jane's actual age was difficult to track because her birthdate is listed as ~1831 from the 1850 census, ~1833 from the 1860 census, ~1834 from the 1870 census. Jane's birth gives a preliminary date for the immigration of at least Elizabeth and the children, if not John.
Jane was the second wife of Peter Ackerman, taking his two sons into her care as well as raising her own daughter.
Our Jane died in 1871 and in 1880, Mary, her daughter with Peter Ackerman, was living with Elizabeth Hindle, the elder. Family
John Henry Hindle (First Known Son of John and Elizabeth)
In 1860, John Henry and his sister, Jane and their respective families are living in residences right next to each other in Paterson. Census Abstracts In 1870 the undertaking business was called Hindle J. H. & Bro. and was located at 175 Main, Paterson. The family probably resided in the residence/business at 115 Ellison which John had built for them shortly after 1871. They had one servant living with them at that time.
From an article in The Paterson Censor, (Weekly), Monday September 24, 1900: "Scenes and Incidents of the Years Gone By, Glimpses of the Past from the Paterson Evening News" ....We might refer to John H. HINDLE and his early start as a barefooted stable boy, and to his evolution as driver of the Calvin hearse with a shiny dicer to the admiration of the town. He died in the major control of the Cedar Lawn cemetery, as a railroad magnate, and a leading First National bank capitalist....
John Henry resided at 115 Ellison St. at the time of his death. The obituaries are a good biographical sketch of John Henry. Obituaries His first wife, Mary Elizabeth Hammond, died of typhoid fever in 1862. He then married Hester Louise Cunningham in 1864. His son John, who was the first to enter the undertaking business with his father, preceded him in death in 1887. John Henry, himself, and his first three children all by Mary Elizabeth, his son Charles and his brother James, all died from nephritis, Bright's disease or some other form of kidney disease. John Henry Hindle was a trustee of and instrumental in the creation of Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Paterson. John H. Hindle had an infant, unnamed, bapt. Cross Street M.E. Church 16 Jun 1863. Which child is unknown. Family Card
Ann H. Hindle Norris (Fourth Surviving Daughter of John)
Ann is the only one of the family who seems to have not lost her spouse or had to work to support herself. It is likely that she helped her husband in his business ventures by helping in the saloon and later in the hotel. She married James Norris who was a fish dealer, saloon keeper and proprietor of the Erie Hotel according to censuses and directories. When they were first married they were living in 1860 with James' parents in Ramapo, New York. Their son Nelson C. Norris was a fire fighter for Paterson who died in 1902. Obituary Daughter Annie died a spinster in 1911. The Nelson Norris descendants seem to have spread out from Paterson. We have Nelson's wife's name straightened out thanks to another researcher working on a collateral line. One branch went to Pennsylvania, some seem to have ended up in Washington, another was in Connecticut working for the railroad, and it is possible there are some in Florida. There are recent additions of members of this family in census and other records, particularly the daughters, Fannie and Annie whose families were located with help of two Norris researchers, Bill Maturo and Charlotte Greig, and finding Alfred Norris living with his sister, Fannie, in the census in Connecticut. Emma Hindle (Fifth Daughter of John and Elizabeth)
A christening was found for Emma Hindle, daughter of John and Elizabeth Hindle in St. Paul's Epsicopal Church records by Arlette Keri. This daughter does not appear in any censuses and it is assumed she died very young.
Salina Hindle Westervelt (Sixth Daughter of John and Elizabeth)
Salina's name has been variously spelled Selina, Celina, Slina, Sabina. It is probable she is the "Caroline" listed with Martin Westervelt, the butcher in 1880. Martin, her husband, has not yet been located in the 1870 census. Salina and her daughter Kate were living with Salina's sisters. Until receiving Civil War pension papers of Martin Westervelt's widow, Selina, I had assumed he died before 1870. There is new information in the census records showing Selina's daughter Kate and her family. They were living at 15 Weiss in Paterson. Family Card
James Augustus Hindle (Second Known Son of John and Elizabeth)
James was also a partner in the undertaking business with his brother, John. He served in the Civil War and died at an early age also of Bright's disease. Information on this son was obtained from his descendant, Arlette Keri. New census information on this line has been added to the census records. James' wife, Elizabeth Harrop, remarried after his death around 1877 to John Lincoln. Family Card
