Black Cat (for soprano and two clarinets) (2008) - setting of Rainer Maria Rilke's poem Schwarze Katze, translation by Beth Ratay. Beth Ratay, mezzo-soprano, Andrew DeBoer, clarinet, Brian Mabry, clarinet.

Einmal (for SSATB chorus) (2006) - premiere performance on May 3, 2008 by the Phoenix Symphony Chorus, Dr. Gregory Gentry, conductor.

Einmal nahm ich zwischen meine Hände
dein Gesicht.

- Rainer Maria Rilke

Once I took your face between
my hands. The moon shone in on it.
The most incomprehensible of things
under overflowing tears.

Almost like a willing thing, that quietly
exists, it was to hold. And nevertheless,
there was no being in the cold night, which
was more incomprehensible to me.

Oh, we flow to these places,
urge all the waves of our heart
into the small surface,
desire and weakness,
and to whom do we finally offer them?

Oh the stranger, who misunderstood us,
Oh the other, that we never found,
spring winds, that disappeared,
and the silence, the losing one.
