Rescue Effort In Vain
Two Children Die, Trapped in Bedroom of Burning Home

by Catherine Warren and Robin Farmer

WETHERSFIELD - When volunteer firefighter Richard Peruta heard the radio call that his neighbor’s house was on fire, he grabbed the family fire extinguisher and ran.
But it was too late. A terrible glow was coming from the windows of the Kycia family home, where two small children, their mother , grandmother and uncle lived.
Peruta, in a voice made hoarse from heat and smoke, said Thursday evening it felt as though it took hours to run across the road that previous evening. His repeated efforts to enter the house were in vain.
Cynthia Cameron, 2, and Garbrille [sic] Cameron, 3, died at Hartford Hospital early Thursday. The girls were found in a back bedroom, where both Peruta, 28, and their mother Cecilea Cameron, had tried to reach them. The girls’ deaths and the cause of the fire are under investigation.
Peruta said he was told the two children “didn’t know what hit them,” a slight comfort to both him and the family, he said.
Peruta stood in front of the house at 241 Highland St., shaking his head at the blackened charcoal streak and empty windows of the modest tow-story farmhouse. Peruta was helping Joseph Kycia, the children’s uncle, recover items from the house.
The Kycia family is a well-respected, long-time farming family that operated a fruit and vegetable stand near the corner of Highland and Collier streets, neighbors and firefighters say. The two small girls and mother helped at the stand during the summers.
James Peruta, who lives with Richard Peruta, his brother, is also a volunteer firefighter and was driving the truck that responded to the fire. Edward Kycia, late husband of the girls’ grandmother, Agnes Kycia, and Agnes Kycia’s brother, Joseph Kycia, had been volunteer firefighters.
Richard Peruta said the fire started in the kitchen and spread quickly up a stairwell into the bedroom.
Members of the Kycia family declined to comment Thursday.
Peruta said he has spoken with Cecilia Cameron and Agnes Kycia, who were treated for smoke inhalation at Hartford Hospital Thursday.

Wethersfield Fire Chief Clinton Hughes, who said he knows the Kycia family well, said the investigation is emotionally difficult for him as well, and he is waiting until the family is “settled” before trying to get more information.
“They’re just super people,” he said.
He said it has not been determined whether the house had smoke detectors. The fire was under control about half and hour after it was reported at 9:50 p.m., he said.
He said the state fire marshal’s office may have a report today. It did not appear that Thanksgiving cooking was responsible for the fire, he said.
Robert L. Dunn, who lives next door, said he called the Fire Department after Agnes Kycia ran to tell him the kitchen was on fire. He said he, to, tried to enter the burning house, but was prevented by heavy smoke and flames.
“They’re destitute now,” Dunn said. “They have nothing and with the little girls gone, they have the additional expense of the funerals.”
Peruta’s mother, Rosena Peruta, said the children used to play on the Perutas’ swing set and with Richard Peruta’s young Dalmatian.
“We’re just not going to see those two little toddlers anymore,” she said.
