Nancy Sauer, Longtime Area Resident Dies
Death brought to a close the career of one of Reno’s well-known and active residents, Nancy Sauer, who died suddenly in her eighty-first year at a local hospital Sunday
Born in Cambourne, Cornwall, England, Feb. 28, 1880, she came to Nevada with her two small children in 1911 and made her home in this area for nearly half a century.
She was married in 1918 to the late George Sauer, pioneer Nevada resident, who, prior to his retirement, was road supervisor for Washoe County. Together they engaged successfully in the guest ranch business for two decades, first acquiring what was to become known as the Del Monte Guest Ranch, which they built into one of the most outstanding establishments of its kind in the region. Then followed acquisition of Crestview, and the Biltmore, catering as always to a select clientele.
Upon the sale of the Biltmore, Mr. and Mrs. Sauer retired to their home on Del Monte lane. Mr. Sauer died shortly thereafter, however, and Mrs. Sauer subsequently purchased a large part of the old Snare Ranch just west of South Virginia street at its intersection with Wells avenue, where she was residing at the time of her death.
With sound business judgement [sic] and keen forsight [sic] rare in a woman of her generation, Mrs. Sauer had great faith in the community. Progress, to her, was an integral part of living. She was happiest when watching construction of any kind, whether it be on the many properties she owned during her lifteime [sic] – or the home of a friend or a commercial building – or a civic one.
Characteristic of her dedication to progress, she recently gave to the City of Reno a right-of-way through her property for the extension of West Plumb land, that it might afford a direct route to the new municipal airport. To the day of her death, she was vitally interested in the street construction now under way there.
She is survived by a daughter, Audrey C. Harris, and a son, W. John Champion; three grandsons, Gordon W. Harris, John G. Champion and William D. Champion, and two great-granddaughters, Katherine E. and Nance C. Harris, all of Reno: a brother, John G. W. Paull of Truro, Cornwall, England and a sister Mrs. Bessie Henwood, of Cambourne, Cornwall, England. She was also the sister of the late William Paull of Reno and the late Lucy Thomas of Cornwall, and was a sister-in-law of Ellen Paull and Mrs. Preston B. Smith of Reno, and William F. Sauer of Washoe Valley. Also surviving are the following nieces and nephews: Francis R. Smith, Edwin Heidenreich, Frances Honey, Roy Heidenrdich [sic] Henry Heidenreich, Leo Sauer, Esther Ames, Ruth Eaton, Alice Lohse, Jean Fry, Forest L. Zurlufh [sic], Roy Paull and Florence Ernst, all of Reno; Helen Heward of Winnemucca; Dr. Loyd P. Smith of Corona Del Mar, California, Myra Ratay of Denver and Gertrude Leary of San Francisco.
Friends are invited to attend funeral services at the Ross Burke Chapel at 3:00 P. M. on Wednesday. Private cremation services will follow at Mountain View Crematory.
