Tributes.comEugene Hanna Bender (Gene), passed away in his sleep at his home in Vienna, VA on Wednesday, May 21, 2014. He was born May 12, 1921 to Ernest and Linnie Bender in Rapid City, South Dakota. He graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines with a degree in electrical engineering. He was hired by General Electric and moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana where her met Evelyn, his wife of 62 years. He entered the Navy near the end of WW II, and after the war returned to GE, who then sent him to the White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico where he was involved with the V-2 missile program. Gene continued in the electronic and missile business, both in private industry and with the government, until his retirement in the 1970's from the latest satellite program. In his retirement, Gene and Evelyn enjoyed their "Pharm" in West Virginia. when they got "itchy feet". They toured North America from Alaska to Mexico with their RV, crossing the country several times. After Evelyn passed away, he spent his time around Vienna with family and friends. Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn and his son, Everett. He is survived by his two other sons, Eldon and Ernie. Together, they were known as the 5 "E"'s. A Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 10 at 1 PM, with a Memorial Service to follow at 1:30 at Money and King Funeral Home. The family requests that any memorial donations be made to a charitable organization of your choice.
